The Venus Transit of 2012

During the spring and early summer of 2012, Venus made a rare transit in front of the Sun. This last happened in 2004, and will not happen again in our lifetime. We therefore experienced a time, linked in meaning to 2004, which is highly significant for our relationships and values.

Venus is the Goddess of Love, and she is very concerned with the form and style of our partnerships, with attraction, with how we present ourselves, and the values that we hold. Her transit of the Sun took place in the sign of Gemini, whilst she was in retrograde motion, and therefore was symbolic of a period of review and reflection, particularly in relation to communication. The exact period of review was 15th May, when she stationed retrograde, to 27th June, when she stationed direct. Her transit across the Sun was on 6th June.

Think back to 2004. What was happening then in your love-life, and in the values you held? How could that period be linked to the spring and summer of 2012? There may be a very obvious meaning for you, such as the start and end of a relationship, or a clear link in the themes that occurred in partnership and values. With Venus in Gemini, we might think this latest review was something light, sparkling, delightful and full of interest. Yet this would be to fail to take into account Gemini’s more complex side.

Gemini is the sign of the twins, and twins in mythical and symbolic terms, often correlate to the light and the dark, to a polarisation. Finding both the light and the dark of our words in relationship may have characterised this transit therefore, and given us much pause for thought.

The chance to reflect and review our relationships is a very important window of time. In what ways might we need to honour the needs of our heart more? How can we embrace both our light and dark sides so that we avoid projecting our own darkness onto another person? This transit evoked images of the Sacred Heart, of compassion and healing for our own wounded hearts. If we left behind a part of our heart in 2004, it is now time to reclaim it.

As Venus crossed the Sun, this shows that our relationships can no longer remain separate from our path in life, from our vocation. If we have been living split lives, whereby our relationships did not accord with our true identity, this review time may have asked us to reconsider. Compartmentalising our lives only works for so long. Without a strong heart at the centre of our life direction, we will only ever be shining at half power. Venus brought the opportunity, and it is up to you to take it.
