Service Profile :
If you really want to get a feel for the local culture, it is important that you take the time to visit at least one of these Wats. Wat Chalong, or Chai Tararam, is one of the most popular and impressive of all the Buddhist temples. The detail of the architecture is really outstanding. This type of architecture is typical of monasteries throughout Thailand though Wat Chalong is more ornate than most. The monks associated with this Wat were famous for being herbal healers. This temple was very active during the miner’s rebellion of 1876 and used almost as a hospital for the injured. Many people still come here in order to receive blessings against injury and illness. The monks tie a string around the wrist as a form of good luck. You can also expect to see people setting off fire crackers. This is how they show gratitude when their prayers have been answered. When you go inside, you will see a container filled with bamboo sticks. You pick up the container and shake it until a stick falls out. Each stick has a number that corresponds to a wooden cabinet which has a piece of paper inside. Find someone to translate your fortune for you. Also, if you are having trouble making decisions, there are wooden blocks on the floor to aid you. The blocks are in pairs, like the halves of fruit. First, think of a yes/no question. Then toss two of the blocks into the air. If both land facing the same direction, the answer is no. If they land in different directions, the answer is yes. There is some basic courtesy you should exhibit while visiting a Wat: -
There is a saying that goes, “Until you have set foot in Wat Chalong, you have not set foot in Phuket.” |
