Ubud Village There are many cultural villages in Bali but Ubud is the one that you must see. It is the self-proclaimed art capital of the island and also the most visited. Even though you may be turned off by the tourism of the village, you will be happy that it is easy to get to with a tourist shuttles and there are plenty of amenities and good hotels. It is located in amongst ride paddies about 35 minutes from Kuta or an hour from Nusa Dua. In Ubud, there are many things to see. There is the Gajah (elephant) Cave just outside of Ubud and many temples in the area. You can visit the temples yourself just by walking through the village. Pura Desa is the former royal palace and it is located in the village’s center. The real thing to see in Ubud is Ubud itself. The whole village has a wonderful, friendly atmosphere to it. There are all sorts of local crafts and souvenirs you can buy. Most of these are sold by people out of their homes. You can also visit the main market which has many different tourist items. I recommend that you buy a sarong. Many of the temples require that you wear one while visiting and they charge you a fee to rent one. There are so many places to stay and keep in mind that you can barter. However, the rooms are cheap enough that it isn’t always necessary. This is one place where it is safe to accept accommodation from the locals. My family and I stay in a small house with all conveniences for only $25. We could have found something cheaper too but it wouldn’t have been nearly as nice as this beautiful, spacious place. Make sure you look at the place before handing over any money. On your way back from Ubud Village, you can visit the black sand volcanic beaches along the way.
