If you visit one gallery in Brisbane, make it the Institute of Modern Art. This facility has been running since 1975, and was one of the first contemporary art institutions in Australia. Located in the beautiful Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, this is part art gallery, part museum and features something for everyone. Each year there are three residences offered to artists from local to international arenas. A calendar of events and exhibition information is available on their website and is one of very few museums to be housed in the same building as a bar. This makes it an ideal place to meet with friends, enjoy the Institute and follow up with conversation and debate over drinks. The Institute is also available to hire for private functions such as weddings or events, and makes a splashing alternative reception venue. A catering partnership is also available and using this company entitles the client to a discount on venue hire, however it is not compulsory.
