Cooks Cottage

East Melbourne Australia

Recommended by : valu_melbourne

Cook’s Cottage was the home of Captain James Cook, the very same man who discovered the country in the 1700’s. This is his original childhood home was purchased in the 1930s. It was presented as a gift to Melbourne for the centenary and shipped over in hundreds of shipping containers, rebuilt in its current position and preserved ever since. It is surrounded by a range of English gardens and to visit is like taking a step back in time and into England. As you go through the cottage you are presented with a range of exhibits including a sound installation to mimic the voices of the family as they may have been when living in the house. The plants are all those you could commonly find in 18th century England, and there is a replica post box from the period. If you post letters here they get a Cook’s Cottage franking stamp.
